At some point the spindles were put in the kiln to dry and we worked on other parts of the project. Next we started to work on the seat. We received a square seat blank and a template with the holes for the legs, spindles and the angles marked. We transferred these to our seat blank. Also in the kiln our tenons for the legs and under carriage parts were being dried. So it was time to layout the seat and start drilling holes for the mortises. Also the mortises for the under carriage were reamed with a tapered reamer.

Drilling the mortises in the seat.

Seat blank laid out with a couple of mortises drilled.

References used to ream out mortises using a tapered reamer.

Ream mortises and test fit legs.

Demo reaming the mortises in the seat.

Finding the centers for the under carriage cross members

Video of using a tapered reamer.

Here are a couple of free Fine Woodworking Videos from Peter Galbert that show whats involved in drilling and reaming these types of chair mortises.
