I painted this Dutch Tool Chest with Real Milk Paint (Real Milk Paint) and I used it for about a month without its top coat or emblem. While on my woodworking journey I talked to many woodworkers and many of them shared their experiences with me about milk paint. Here is a good article from Peter Galbert on Milk Paint (Milk Paint Article). I took a Windsor Chair Making class in Port Townsend Wa. at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking from Peter (Port Townsend School of Woodworking). The Real Milk Paint needs to be mixed and filtered before being applied. He also told me to put a top coat of linseed oil to protect my finish. I have applied 2 coats so far. The first was absorbed like a sponge and quickly dried. It did not affect the milk paint or the acrylic paint on the emblem. The first coat dried over night and added a layer of resiliency to the milk paint and also darkened it a bit. I am not sanding between coats because it is a tool box and a I wanted a more rugged look. The second coat will be my last coat and as you can see from the picture below did not get absorbed as fast as the first coat. I do want to protect it though and these coats of oil add a nice touch.
The difference between a coat of linseed oil and just milk paint alone.
First coat of linseed oil absorbed.
Second coat of linseed oil drying and being absorbed more slowly
