easy wood projects
I need to start building a shavehorse so I thought I would put some of my thoughts here. I got the plans from Peter Galbert Chair Makers blog (Shavehorse Plans) . Today I bought a 2x12 and broke it down to start making the bench. I used a crosscut hand saw to break down the stock and man did it feel good! Just sawing to a good rhythm out in the sunshine; a gentile breeze blowing in my face, ah such a pleasure. I used my learnings from Jeff Millers class as far as stance, body position and how to use my arms. Before you new it the board was cut and ready for the next step. You may ask why not just use a circular saw or a table saw or a chop saw? Well this is great saw practice. I used this exercise to saw to a straight line. I took care to position my body correctly. I corrected my self not to be sloppy and try to learn something try to better my sawing. I will use these techniques when I saw dovetails or tenons so it is not a waste of time. Look how nice the cut looks, by using the correct saw the cut is not splintered and look below how square it is. If I was making a solid wood cabinet I would hardly have to shoot the boards to get them square. Maybe just a touch up with a plane and they would be ready. As the master says "You can always do better":)

Draw a square line

Use your thumb nail to guide the start of the cut.

Light pressure on the forward first cut.
Follow the line cant the saw slightly back to follow the line.

Clean cut use a sharp crosscut saw

Square cut little work left to do
