easy wood projects - Shavehorse Part 5

easy wood projects

I made a tapering plane and started tapering the legs for my shavehorse. I cut the legs to 3 foot pieces. I measured the length of the mortise and it is 4 inches. I made the tapers a bit longer because I intend to hammer a wedge through the top of the legs to expand the tenon and glue it at the same time. Later I will trim these flush with the bench.

Four legs cut to 3 feet each.

I picked this wood with the grain going all the way through.

Length of tapered mortise 4 inches.

Wooden folding ruler with built in sliding ruler. A great depth gauge.

Marked off 5 inches for taper and a bit extra.

Marked off the bottom to 3/4 of an inch smallest portion of the taper.

Used a draw knife to start the taper and get down to smallest diameter.

Starting to taper the leg using my tapering plane.

Some clean up work was done with the draw knife along the way to help the tapering plane. If I had a lathe I would use that to rough out the taper.

Savings from plane as I cut the taper.

At a little over 4 inches.

Finished leg 1.
