easy wood projects
After the body was glued up and dry we cut a sole out of 1/4" wenge. There was a jig used to rout the slot. The bottom of the plane was cleaned and scraped of dried glue. The bottom of the plane and sole were drilled and doweled. The drill we used was a horizontal drill or it could have been a horizontal boring machine. Then the ramps and the sole were filed to perfection and fitted to the plane iron. The sole was glued up and clamped over night. We then started to work on our next plane that would be similar but longer so as to be a joiner plane. I modeled the first plane after an actual James Krenov plane my smoother and the other I modeled off of a plane Jim Budlong swore by as his best joiner. I was very happy with how they both performed. Below is a video of me using the smoothing plane before I shaped it to its final shape.
Contemplating what my plans should look like.
My final profile of the smoothing plane. Notice my mock up in the back ground. Also notice the little hammer I use to tap and adjust the plane. Tap it on the side you want the blade to travel to.
