A James Krenov Original Plane
This is a class I took on how to make a Krenov style plane from the school that James Krenov taught at. It was a while after his passing that I took this class but I had been a fan of his woodworking for a long time and have read many of his books. The class was taught by Jim Budlong one of his former students and Jim has been teaching there even while James Krenov was still active in the school. So I got a good understanding of James Krenovs style and how it had changed over the years. This class was the beginning class into their furniture making program and they taught what is written in some of James Krenovs books. When James would finish a project or need some down time or need to think he would make a plane to relax. He gave some of these away as gifts to people.
The first thing we learned was how to sharpen and I mean intimately how to sharpen. We were taught to sharpen by hand using a simple hand grinder and water stones. James was a big fan of oil stones they explained but water stones cut metal much more quickly. Here are some tips on water stone:
- Of the ones I have tried Norton Stones seem to be the best
- I keep them in a small tub of water with a drop of bleach
- When switching grits rise off stones and tools so that coarse grits do not contaminate finer grit stones
- Learn to use your hands and eyes instead of a jig it is much faster
- You will want some kind of system to flatten these stones. My favorite was a diamond plate stone that made quick work of doing this. Norton also has a different system they use with an actual flattening stone. Keeping the stones flat is an essential part of having a good, sharp, straight edge.
Believe it or not sharpening and learning how to sharpen the Krenov way was a day or 2 of class. We received our 2 plane blades and went to work perfecting these blades to get the correct angle on the Ron Hock blade sharpened and honed to a fine edge.
