Last month I took a class from Jeff Miller called Build a Night Stand at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking (Port Townsend School of Woodworking) (Build a Nightstand Class Description) . Jeff not only taught basic joinery using hand tools but also taught many techniques outlined in his book Foundations of Better Woodworking (Foundations of Better Woodworking). Jeff took the time to examine how we stand when we work. How we use our arms when we saw and use chisels and many other aspects of using hand tools like how to stand when sawing, planing or even using a table saw. He also talked about safety and how to use power tools efficiently and with safety in mind at all times. I learned so much from Jeff and apply what I have learned from him daily in everything from sharpening to layout to cutting dovetails and mortises. Here is Jeffs blog about the class (Jeff Miller Blog about the night stand class). All in all it was a great trip, great class and Port Townsend was a relaxing place. Jeff Miller is a great teacher, pays great attention to detail and has much patience. If possible I will take a class from him in the future.
