easy wood projects
I recently finished a spinning wheel that I put together. It was pretty smooth already and my client wanted a flat authentic finish instead of a shiny plastic finish. I sanded the parts with 320 and wiped them down with alcohol. Once dry I applied a heavy coat of boiled linseed oil, let it set for about 20 minutes and wiped it up. I let is bask in the sun for an afternoon and then I let this dry for 2 days. I then applied a coat of paste wax. I let the paste wax set for about 20 minutes and wiped it in with a cotton cloth. You could also use a stiff brush to push the wax in the wood pores kind of forcing the wax in and burnishing the wood at the same time but since the wood was already oiled I thought this would be good enough. This spinning wheel will be left indoors and no glass or cup will be laid upon it. So I believe this finish will last for quite some time. The beauty of this finish is that one can always hit it with extra fine steel wool, re-oil and re-wax to obtain a new finish quickly.
Here you can see the difference what just a little linseed oil can do to the wood. Its always best to try putting it on a scrap piece of the same wood to see what it may do to your finished piece but be warned on a larger piece and wood being what it is you will just get a taste of the final outcome.
Just one coat of linseed oil is all you need some times. It will darken the wood but not too dark or unnatural like a stain. I leave it out in the sun for hours not only to speed up drying but also the sun seems to bring out or darken the woods tannins.
Paste wax is easy to apply, dries fast and does not leave streaks or runs. It protects nicely. There are many types of waxes available. You can try light, dark or bees wax. They all have their beauties.
The finished wheel. What a difference from plain wood. This wheel now feels warm and inviting.
A video well worth watching. It may open another world of finishes for you.
