easy wood projects
Looking at the plans I needed 2 inch thick stock for the bench and most everything else. What I have available is about 1 1/2 inch stock, so for the bench to avoid flex I glued up 2 2x12s and sawed them to 64 inches long. The bench will be hefty and stable. Im a good sized guy and I want to anchor my work not be riding a bucking bronco. I also laid out the pattern on my bench.
Glue up went well. I used several clamps along with cauls all along the board. If you have a long board like this to glue up using cauls maximizes your clamping pressure and you can get away with using fewer clamps. For cauls I just used scarp pieces of 2x4 I had laying around. These were the same types of cauls I used at College of the Redwoods school of Fine Furniture to glue up my Krenov style wood plane.
