After the legs and under carriage were all fitted they were removed and placed in the kiln so as to dry the tenons. The mortises for the spindles were also drilled and fitted as were the mortises for the arm posts. Using the adze to chop away the bowl of the seat was a new experience for me and an enlightening one. Using the scorp to start carving the bowl of the seat was somewhat counter intuitive as was actually making the beautiful curves on the seat with a draw knife. After hours and days of working with these tools I could see that an artisan or craftsman who is well versed in using these tools could actually carve Michael Angelos David! with them. Imagine everyday going into your shop and carving sculpting seats for 10 hours a day. After a while the tools become an extension of your hands. You can actually feel the edge of the blade cutting. If you can get to that point then you can begin also to visualize wood and what shapes it contains in itself before you start. Something that with power tools can be done but is a different experience and that singularity with the wood will come differently. Peter tells people that working with these tools is fast and efficient for making one off pieces. He uses power tools when they do a better job or are more efficient but most of the time to do something well with a power tool it takes a lengthy set up or jigs. There is something special about a quite setting just you and the wood bring out each others best.
