easy wood projects

I made this root froe club to use for my green wood projects. If your going to split wood it is an essential tool. If you use a mallet or anything else you will soon break it or ruin it. These clubs see a lot of use and abuse. If you look at one that has been used for a while it will appear chewed up from all the blows it has given to the steel froe. One of the criteria for making a root club was to use a root from a dogwood tree. This is due to a dogwood tree having a tight clumped root ball and not the deep tap roots other trees have. What I had available was an uprooted apple tree that has been seasoned outside for a few years. It is checked, dry and has spalted. The root ball was a bit small but for my first small club I think it will work. I got the information for this club and some other tools from  Drew Langsners book "Green Woodworking. I would suggest you use a sharp axe to clean things up but the roots have dirt so your edge will dull fast. I rinsed my root clump off before I started but since it was sitting around for a while I did not scrub it. I will be able to use this right away but if I were using green wood I would need to let it dry for upto 6 months in a cool shaded area and seal the ends to prevent checking. Using seasoned wood I can use it right away and the wood should have stabilized as well. If you are using green wood you will need to make the club bigger due to shrinkage. The book calls for you to make 2 clubs one larger for using in a maul or axe and a smaller one like this for using on a froe. It also says you can use a section of tree that has a few knots in it in case you dont have a root ball to work with. I will give this a try and let you know how it works. So far it feels good, solid strong and heavy. The root ball is awesome. Hopefully it will all hold together. I used a draw knife to shape the handle to my hand size. I would suggest you use and axe to whittle things down pretty close and then use your draw knife. Maybe finish with a spoke shave to smooth things out. But keep one thing in mind this is a club. Soon it will get chewed up from use so start making and drying your next club when you have a chance.

Root ball from an uprooted apple tree.

Cut in sections, Im going to make some spoons and possibly a ladle.

Axe work to clean things up.

Draw knife work, the head is about 9 inches. The handle is about the same but could be a bit longer to balance things out better.

Shaping the handle with a draw knife.

Finished handle for my hand.
