easy wood projects
This project has been in the works for quite some time. I dont mean actually working on it just thinking about it. Its a mystery sometimes whats underneath your carpet. I have seen bits and pieces of the hardwood floor but there has always been so much furniture and stuff to move around. When I first got this house the carpet was pretty good. I would say almost new but the years fly by and after about 20 this carpet has about had it. I decided instead of doing another rug shampoo to simply remove the carpet and let the beauty of these hardwood floors shine through. Unfortunately someone had splattered paint on these floors and never bothered to clean it up. They just carpeted over it. This particular carpet may have been the second or third one but they left the older strips in place. The strips they used to stretch the carpet. The nails that were holding these strips down were from the 1950s at least. They looked like square cut nails in some cases. I pulled all this stuff up including the carpet pad that was stapled to the floor and the the staples for the previous carpet pad that were also still in place.
I started by removing the carpet and pad. I then removed all the carpet stretching wood strips that were nailed to the ends of the floor. I used a pry bar nail puller to remove these and a tack puller to remove the staples. I also used pliers for some stubborn nails and staples.
I then tried to remove the dried paint. I tried mineral spirits and paint thinner but had no luck. Then I read where someone used a hair dryer to heat the paint and break the bond. I tried this and it worked. I used a putty knife to scrape the paint off while heating it with a hair dryer. I could have used a heat gun but read where there is a possibility of burning the varnish or wood even so I used a hair dryer and it seemed to have enough heat. After that I used mineral spirits and a plastic scouring pad to take off most of the rest of the paint and let it dry for about 30 minutes. I used a product call Murphys Oil Soap to further clean the floor but I have read where that is not a good product to use. Next I will try the suggested water and vinegar cleaner to see what happens. This Murphys Oil Soap does not have any oil actually in it. It is just a mild soap that is supposed to be environmentally safe and to be used on wood. I will leave what to use up to you. My floor is about 80 or so years old. Im assuming from the scraping I did it had an original shellac or oil and wax finish. I remember our floors being waxed in the 60s so that is what I wanted to do for a finish, just something simple. Next I let the floor dry and applied a thin coat of Johnsons Paste wax. I let this dry for 30 minutes and buffed it out and that is it. I see at the store they have a few different products called restore etc etc but they take quite a while to dry and have urethane in them. I just wanted to do a simple finish on this old floor and bring out the character of the wood. If this floor could tell stories I bet it would have some good ones.
Lots of dried paint to clean up
Heat with a hair dryer and scrape with a putty knife.
The more I cleaned the more staples I found. A tack puller worked like a charm.
Paint mostly gone now.
Next Mineral Spirits and a plastic scrub pad.
After the mineral spirits and scrub pad treatment.
Letting floor washed with Murphys oil Soap dry.
Applied Johnsons paste wax.
Let paste wax dry for 30 minutes.
Buff out the paste wax after 30 minutes and your done.
