easy wood projects
After we spent a day or so learning how to sharpen we were given our wood and a hand out with details about the construction and tuning of these types of planes. The wood used was maple for the plane body and wenge for the sole. You could almost use any kind of wood to make a plane like this but hardwoods tend to be more durable.
We laid out a 45 degree line for the plane iron ramp and a 65 degree for the forward slope. This left us with an odd shaped triangle of a cutoff. The ramps were smoothed of planer and saw marks and angles measured and refined. We used a sharp file for this work. When put back together the plane we left about a 1 inch gap in the bottom for the plane blade to protrude. Before we drilled the holes for the dowels we routed a grove for the cap screw. Yes these planes have a cap iron. We also made a cross pin and drilled a hole for this before the glue up. This will be where our wedge holds the plane iron in place. We let the glued up plane dry over night.
