easy wood projects
Today I laid out the taper for my reamer on a block of maple and removed some wood. If you are not using a lathe to do this tapering of the wood stock then I found that using a good rip saw and draw knife will let you hog out some wood quickly. You can use a number of different power tools to do this as well. Just plan well when doing the set up to cut this taper. A lathe is probably the best option. On Peter Galberts blog you will find another nice tutorial on making tapered reamers. Peter makes his for making Windsor chairs and they are a precision instrument. I know I have had the pleasure of using one of his.(Peter Galbert Tapered reamers)
Lay out for tapered reamer. I used the blade as a guide. The top of the reamer will be slightly narrower and not quite as long but Im using this just to make my shavehorse bench.
This is an example of how I intend to go about eventually rounding this reamer. This is a Reel Foot duck call I made out of a block of cherry with just a hand plane. The finish is linseed oil.
I used a rip saw to remove some wood. It worked nicely.
I used my draw knife to shave some wood off as well.
To properly sharpen a draw knife a nice jig like the Drawsharp is a big help. Follow this link for some more information and a video on the Draw Sharp. (Drawsharp) The rehab kit is sold separately and works well on older draw knives that need a lot of help.
Here is the taper roughed in on 4 sides. Next will be to make it 8 sided, then 16, 32 then round it.
