easy wood projects
I have a poplar panel I glued up at a Jeff Miller cabinet making class at the Port Townsend School of Woodworking that needed to be flattened. I used my James Krenov style planes I recently made at a Summer coarse I took at the College of the Redwoods school of Fine Furniture (College of the Redwoods). I used the joiner plane to flatten the panel and the smoother to finish off. The planes have Hock irons (Ron Hock plane irons) and were the first things I learned to sharpen on a hand grinder, hollow ground, and then on water stones by hand with no jigs. Im now sold on this method of sharpening. As you can see from the wispy thin shavings, the system works and the planes are a dream to use. I modeled the smoothing plane off of a James Krenov original.
