easy wood projects - Square and Shoot the Panel

easy wood projects

Today I finished squaring the panel and shot both ends with my wooden joiner plane. I clamped the panel in my Moxon style vise I made from plans I got at (Bench Crafted Moxon Vise Plans) and hit the edges with my wooden joiner plane as well. The Moxon vise I made with 2x6 pine, threaded rod and a few nuts and washers. I tried out a couple of older crosscut panel saws to see how they performed. I had bought a couple shorter saws a while back around 20 or so inches total length so that they would fit in my Dutch Tool Chest. The shorter saws are easier to handle in some respects but you have to concentrate a bit more to keep them going straight. They are lighter than the bigger saws so they tend to move around easier. From Christopher Schwarzs blog (Christopher Schwarz Blog) he had some older Diston saws resharpened. You could also follow the procedures in this blog to clean up an older saw and sharpen them (Vintage Saws Library). I also used a card scarper to further smooth the surface. Its almost ready to finish. I will just hit it with 320 and it will be ready to finish.

Evening out the edge of the panel with an older Diston panel saw.

Shooting the ends with a joiner plane.

Ends square.

Clamped my panel in my Moxon style vise I made out of a 2x6, threaded rod, nuts and washers. I planed the edges just a bit to clean them up and remove saw marks.

Nice shavings from my wooden joiner plane.

Used a card scraper to further smooth out the panel.
