easy wood projects

I need to make a tapered reamer so that the bench legs on the shave horse have the proper splay and rake angles. I was looking through my Windsor chair syllabus and the plans for making a tapered reamer are on John Alexanders Green Wood Site. John wrote the book Make a Chair from a Tree. The plans for this tapered reamer Im making is at the following link.(John D. Alexander Tapered Reamer) The web site is real cool. If you have a chance check it out. There is tons of information about making chairs and working with green wood but also he shows how to make tools which is extra cool! So for the first step I went through and found an old key hole saw with a close enough taper like he describes. I also found a block of  maple to used for the handle. I currently do not have a lathe so I will be rounding the handle with a draw knife and spoke shave like he describes but has not personally done.

I found 3 compass/key hole saws but just one had the right taper John mentions.

I took apart the saw.

Found the section with the correct dimensions 1 1/4 - 9/16 per 10 inches of length.

I cut what I needed with a hack saw.

The blade for my tapered reamer and a block of maple I have laying around.
