easy wood projects - Wooden Spoons Part 7

I have to say carving this bowl can be addictive. I used a gouge for this and probably not the right one as far as sweep and bevel but it seems to be doing the job. I have to stress the correct hold on the gouge due to safety concerns. I hold the gouge in my right hand and choke up on it so that it does not extend past the length of the bowl or width for that matter. If you do this your fist will prevent the gouge from gouging you. This is an easy technique to learn but use caution at first and patience. Do not go too fast at first but use control and learn what works for you. Soon it will be natural. Also use your thumb from the opposite hand, that along with your fingers to vary the gouges angle and depth of cut. Not too much pressure is needed. This technique will need to be learned as well. I also used the templates because Im starting to worry about making the bowl too thing or even going through to the other side. You will learn quite a few things by doing this like chip carving, grain direction and generally how your gouge works as well as how it needs to be honed every once in a while to keep it sharp and the chips flying.
